Here are some movies that I generated from real and simulated data. They are accessible through my Vimeo account. I reproduce them here:
- First here is a double view of the 2MASS Redshift Survey, on the left the groups of galaxies, on the right iso-density surfaces of empty regions. The movie start with only galaxies within ~30 Mpc/h from the observer, located at the center. After some rotation around the observer, the view zooms out and galaxies up to 50-60 Mpc/h are shown, then up to 100 Mpc/h and finally up to 200 Mpc/h. It is clear that incompleteness becomes dominant after 60 Mpc/h.
- In the movie below, I show the result of an N-body simulation for which the initial conditions were generated such that they reproduce the distribution of galaxies in the Local Universe, up to 60 Mpc/h from us. I highlighted with big colored balls some known large structure: the Perseus-Pisces supercluster (magenta), the Hydra-Centaurus-Norma supercluster (green), the Coma cluster (top, in white), the Hercules (in white, behind at the beginning of the simulation) and the Ophiuchus cluster (in the middle plane, in white).
- This movie shows a close up on a voidy region of an N-body simulation. I have represented the particles in green and I am highlighting the underdense region with a blue iso-density surface. The void identification procedure obtained from applying the watershed algorithm in Lagrangian coordinate is represented with an an orange iso-surface.
- And finally a movie showing the brand new 2M++ catalog of the Local Universe. The transparent white points correspond to galaxies. The Milky Way is put at the center of the box. The side of the box is 200 Mpc/h. The red surfaces correspond to regions of luminosity density equal to three times the mean luminosity density. The representation of surfaces does not go beyond 150 Mpc/h in this movie. A higher definition movie can be downloaded from this other site.
